My first house, the back wall (kitchen ) was missing for three months and the bit of kitchen which was left, was diminished slowly over those three months so come the end all I was left with was what was the outside tap and a washing machine sat in the middle of an empty space , discharge pipe tucked into what was the outside drain

This house, no kitchen for two weeks, but the sink was only missing for a few days. Yes it was propped up as no work top or cabinets supporting it, but at least it was only not there for about 3 or 4 days

First time around I seriously cooked everything on the BBQ or got take out, ate out - we had money in those days

This time around, the kitchen table went into the hall along with the fridge freezer, kettle, sandwich toaster, George Forman, and microwave - that became my kitchen. Veg became bags of salad or frozen peas, tins of sweetcorn, frozen steam veg bags. Meat and fish was cooked on the foreman and we ate a lot of "on toast' meals

Like you, we don't like ready meals nor particularly like take out, but sometimes, they have their uses. With both kitchens, it was major refurbs, walls and ceilings down, dust and mess everywhere , so seriously, making more then the most basic of meals was really beyond the realms of being hygienic - cement dust coats everything and washing everything down before cooking, and keeping it dust free whilst cooking - pretty impossible so a quick meal on a plate asap was the way we went

Sure, not the most healthiest balanced diet, but for a few days it sufficed

The stress of the work happening was enough for me ( esp both time we done it ourselves ) I didn't need the stress of getting  balanced meals on plates as well
  • Based on friends who had their kitchen done, my advice would be to mentally prepare for its a) going over budget and b) being behind schedule. Sorry to be negative, but if it is finished on time it'll feel like a lovely bonus.

Install an outside tap, but they should  be leaving a temp tap anyway.

When we had our kitchen refitted I set up shop in the dining room. Microwave, slow cooker and electric steamer, kettle there wasn’t much I could cook. Large plastic bowl for washing up.

Why pay full price when you may get it YS ;)

Oh I'm going to be in the same boat shortly! I've got an instant pot, a microwave, a sandwich toaster and my builders have told me they'll set up a temporary bit of counter so that I can have a hob. I see a lot of stew on the horizon!

I'd love to get some freezer meals going, but I've been so focussed on trying to eat the entire freezer contents that I didn't even think of that!

We have been renovating our kitchen & found that the following is great:

We set up a microwave, slow cooker, kettle & toaster station in the living room like in student halls

    - casseroles, meat + veg in sauces & hearty soups in the slow cooker
    - pasta, rice & potatoes cooked in the microwave
    - quick things like beans on toast
    - Rice noodles can be cooked using just a bowl of boiling water

Under such circumstances, I probably wouldn't bother with anything that needed to be cooked, full stop! The supermarket bakery would be my friend.

Not sure I'll get away with no cooking - if it was just me, it'd be grand, but toddler will need some simple cooked stuff at least.
