So, having received the email from the OR with my bankruptcy order yesterday - barely 24 hours after making my petition, I was left a voicemail from the Insolvency Service asking me to call them back. I was so nervous when I listened to that message - the guy had called from Liverpool which surprised me, as I'm in Herts, just north of London. I needn't have worried - he had such a lovely soft brogue & sounded so friendly & approachable that I had (almost) no fear in returning his call. Honestly, he was super friendly & not at all scary (as I told him!) I was immediately put at my ease. He told me that yes, bankruptcy is a serious business and that they have a job to do but that there's no point in making it any harder than it has to be. Because I'd 'girded my loins' to make the call I was all set to have the long phone interview when he said this initial call was just to make an appointment to carry that out! I was almost disappointed - I thought this was it and that the worst was almost over but I actually have to wait until next Wednesday morning! Never mind, I'm no longer worried, upset or scared in fact, I'm almost looking forward to 'putting my case' and explaining how I got myself into this mess. Maybe it's my Catholic guilt but I feel the need to confess & for absolution! So, to all of you out there dreading the OR getting in touch I can honestly say - they are just people at the end of the day. What a relief!

Don't be scared! I was and had to go to a meeting with my case worker, but she was lovely and very understanding. They have a job to do, but unless you are associated with any kind of illegal activity, or have had more than one bankruptcy, its very straight forward indeed. It's not a court, it's not a judge, it's just someone asking what happened, plain and simple. My meeting was only 30 mins long.. I still email my case worker, 3 years on, with any questions I have, or follow up issues, and she gets straight back to me and is very handy. The are not ogres, they are normal people who deal with people in financial distress on a daily basis, and the relief when you have finished the meeting, is amazing, such a relief and I certainly wondered why I put myself through so much stress and hassle by trying not to go bankrupt... I just extended the anxiety and could have been discharged even earlier... we live and learn!!1
