Hi everyone,

I had oral surgery today on my top two wisdom teeth and they were successfully extracted. The surgeon refused to do my lower ones, though, because he said he has to cut into the bone and it will be too uncomfortable and painful to withstand awake  :o so, I've been referred to the hospital to have both removed under general anaesthetic.

Has anyone had their wisdom teeth removed under general?
Because I have a feeling it is going to hurt a LOT more afterwards - the surgeon said I should take a week off to recover.

Right now, about 8 hours after the local procedure and only 1 300mg ibuprofen taken about 30 minutes after it, I really don't think the pain is as bad as people had warned me it would be.
Perhaps it will be worse tomorrow but it's just a bit boring not to be able to chew anything; other than that, all fine. More comfy than before!

If you had wisdom teeth that were so bad they needed general, please tell me what your recovery was like? I have 6-9 months of fear ahead  :s

Sore and uncomfortable afterwards rather than painful. Don’t think there was that much difference between local and general, other than the effects of the aenesthetic.

either way expect soreness and bruising to come out after a couple of days. Think it took about a week before all the bruising had settled down.

Thanks - I am not in any pain but I think people have said your lower ones are much more painful than your upper ones, and it only took him about 30 seconds to remove the most difficult one - I think about 15 seconds for the first one. So perhaps that's why they don't really hurt nor exhibit any swelling, rather than local vs general.

With you on the discomfort, though!

I think the bottom ones are also going to hurt because they are much more impacted, nearer the nerves and require drilling the bone  :#

You also need a few days after general to recover, so I've been warned...
