I've not heard of salary sacrifice in an educational setting (at least not in England); how common is it? I know it occurs in other forms of employment but nobody I know in the teaching sector seems familiar with it.

Yes, I am in the USS and my contributions (or more accurately my employer contributions) to both the DB and DC parts of the scheme are definitely Salary Sacrifice1
