Asking obo my son.  Do you have to go through all the legal things if you change to a different provider, like you do if you are re-mortgaging?

Yes. Ideally new provider will give you a free solicitor or cashback to pay for your own.

Yes. A remortgage is a new mortgage with a new lender on the same property so you have checks and some searches but not as many as on a purchase and as Wyf says, many lenders cover some or all of the costs involved.

Changing your mortgage to a different provider is remortgaging.

Yes, I suppose it is.  I meant just changing the mortgage to a different provider, as opposed to borrowing more money.  Thanks for your reply .
