Paying into DB pension when retired

Thanks in advance for answers.

I am lucky enough, pension wise, to be in the 1995 NHS pension scheme and can(will) retire at 55 with full contributions.

A current work situation means that I am in effect seconded every 7 weeks to work for my local county council for 1 week. The county council re imburse my NHS trust so I get just the one salary.
When I do retire, I will probably start to work part time for the council, too many complications for going back to the NHS around pension abatement plus a change is as good as a rest as they say.
Anyway my question, could I join the County Council DB pension even though & I will be retired & collecting from the NHS one or will I need to enrol in a NEST type pension, in which case I probably won’t bother.

Once again thanks

The OP above has retired on a DB pension (RAF)  and is now offered a DB pension with the NHS.
You will retire  on a DB pension (NHS) and will be offered a DB pension with LGPS.
  • My wife avoided the abatement issue after working many years part time, by working fulltime for a year then retiring (from the 1995 scheme), taking a break and coming back part time 0.5 FTE. Also she was able to retain time served leave entitlements and top of grade pay.  She then set up her own SIPP and pensions 100% of her new salary, so only pays tax (after personal allowance) on the pension received . But I guess the new DB scheme may be a better deal for you, something to think about anyway , good luck whatever.

You should indeed be able to join the LGPS. Even if you needed to enrol in what you describe as a NEST type pension, it would be worth doing - 'free' money from your employer, so why on earth wouldn't you? If you were only in the scheme for a couple of years, you could take the whole contents of your 'pot' as a cash lump sum, with at least 25% tax free (more, if you are not paying tax in the year you cash in the pot).

Yes. There are no cross-scheme abatement rules or the like in the public sector.

No - you will be auto-enrolled in the LGPS from day 1.
