Npower default

After seeing a mortgage advisor my credit report showed a default of £58 from Npower as settled. We moved provider when in a previous property and within weeks of switching our landlord gave us notice and we quickly moved property.

It transpires after speaking to npower this £58 was a final bill. It was sent to debt collectors and eventually written off. I can emphatically state I knew nothing of this bill. Absolutely nothing. All their correspondence was sent to the previous address. I have requested that the account be reopened which they have done and has been paid.

Npower have confirmed that whilst credit people will be notified that payment has been made in full and account closed it will still show as a default account and will not be removed from my credit file.

My advisor has told me that this will effect put an end to my mortgage application. I am so upset. Is there anything I can do? Npower have said I can appeal but won't win as the default was recorded correctly. Its my word against theirs. Also said it was pointless going to Experian as they will always take the side of the company.

Please, any ideas??

  • What is the default date?

Lots of people successfully apply for a mortgage with defaults and CCJs on their files.  They use a mortgage broker who specialises in adverse credit files.

If you post your problem on the mortgages board, there are mortgage brokers who are MSE members over there.
