How much can I pay in to my SIPP at 40% relief?

I was made redundant last October and am trying to work out how much I can pay into my SIPP to gain the benefit of 40% relief. I presume the taxable element of the redundancy payment will contribute to my earnings but I am still unclear what taxable earnings I have been paid over the 40% threshold. I have not had any earnings since redundancy except a few weeks JSA.
I have P45's from my previous employer and JSA. Is it possible to work it out from them? I can only see total pay and total tax and not a figure for taxable earnings.
Thanks

  • Why do you think total pay on a P45 is different to taxable earnings?

To be on the safe maybe you could explain what your definition of taxable earnings is.

When I spoke to the tax office a couple of years ago they said that the amount I could add to a SIPP to gain tax relief at 40% was only on taxable earnings above the threshold so this did not include things like NI and my Teachers pension contributions which were deducted before tax.

You have either completely misunderstood them or spoke to someone who hasn't a clue.

Without knowing all of your taxable income details and what you have paid into your pension in this tax year whilst employed no one is really going to be able to point you in the right direction.
