Notice period and references

Hi there,
I was recently offered a job, but I had told them I have a longer notice period when it actually less as I wanted some time off. I was wondering when the new company would ask for references or whether they would call my current company? Does anyone know what the new employer does after a candidate has accepted the offer?

If they accepted 3 months they must really want you 🙂 have the little break before starting.
They will likely ask who you want to submit as contacts for references, unless it’s a regulated industry or subject to particular x years background checking.
Actually the reference required situation has helped me a couple of times turn down jobs I wasn’t sure about so can’t grumble.0 -
They could do any of those things, or none of them! Nobody apart from your new company can tell you what they will do.sunalive said:Hi there,

It is generally very unwise to resign until the new company has received satisfactory references (assuming they ask for them).
Also keep in mind that once you give notice, your current company could insist that you use up any untaken holiday during the notice period. Or they could insist that you work every day of your notice then pay you for the holiday after you leave. It is their choice.0 -
If the new employer does query the notice period, simply say that is what you believed it to be.

I would be more concerned with them calling my current employer before I hand in my notice period. They use a 3rd party company to do background checks. Has anyone had any experience with them?TELLIT01 said:If the new employer does query the notice period, simply say that is what you believed it to be.0 -
When I offer a job, it is subject to satisfactory references. I then take the reference details from the candidate and contact the names given. Once all is OK contracts are drawn up, signed, and start dates confirmed.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0

Does the previous employer normally put the notice period in the reference? Or do you verify the notice period was right?74jax said:When I offer a job, it is subject to satisfactory references. I don't ask that. I say sunalive has applied for the position of xyz can you comment on their ability to....... Then list some things. Some reply with answers, some reply with their standard reference.sunalive said:

My company has a standard reference - name, date stated with the company, leaving date, reason for leaving and job title. That's all we give.
It may be your p45 has leaving date on? If you hand that on.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
