Census 2021

I earned £1500 for 6 weeks part time work on the 2011 census. The work was really easy - basically knocking on doors and checking people had filled the census in for around 20 hours a week. I actually found the work quite fun - like a glorified paper round. I see that recruiting has already started for some of the managerial roles for 2021 census. All in all there will be 40,000 positions to fill throughout the uk. I expect the role of field officer to be advertised at the end of this year. If somebody could post a link once these roles become available that would be great. It was capita who oversaw the 2011 census so I am presuming they are in for it again. Like I said it is £1500 for doing a glorified paper round for 6 weeks! Easy money! It could pay for a nice holiday. I would be interested to know if anybody else did the 2011 census and what they thought about the experience.

I also worked on the 2011 Census and really enjoyed it. Recruitment was via a telephone interview and the induction day was at a local swanky hotel. I was paid for attending the induction too. I was also working full time at my regular job but as the Census work could be done at times to suit me over 6 weeks it wasn't too difficult to fit in. The pay was good and they also paid a mileage allowance. I was contacted a few months ago asking if I'd be interested in working on the 2021 Census. I replied saying I would be but I don't know what happens next. I'm going to look at the link in the above post.

I was recently involved in a trial census to get systems in place for 2021. Recruitment is being done by Adecco this time and is likely to be largely online based, where participants have to complete modules prior to any offer of employment. It is also going to be much more tech based, with the field officers needing to be competent in using an app based system when visiting premises. The hours of work expected will likely be variable contracts (10hrs, 16hrs, 25hrs etc) but there may well be much more expectation that the field officer is available at specific previously agreed times. Possible to arrange around other roles, but tighter than previously. Mileage was paid, but not in all cases and to claim you had to have business insurance. The rate of pay was IIRC well above living wage for field officers. If you have done the role previously and enjoyed it, hopefully you'll apply again. It's a mad period but some of us thrive on that...3
