    One thought I have had if looking to go down the self-employed route to reduce the NI contribution top up cost would be that the self- employment would likely need to be reported to your car / house insurers (as they usually ask about second and/or part time jobs) and what impact that might have on premiums.  Although I'd guess any increases are likely to be considerably less than the saving on NI cost.
