New fire alarm rules for scotland

Has anyone heard about the new Scottish regulations requiring linked smoke alarms in room where most time is spent plus hallways at each level and heat detector in kitchen?

The article I read says this will apply to every home owner and landlord and law takes effect February 2021.

Seems like a substantial outlay may be involved and I would have expected way more publicity about this but this is the first I’ve heard.

I heard about it last week, as my brother told me.

There probably was publicity around it before, but I can't say I recall anything in the 3 years I've been up here.

I knew about this for rented properties - has been law for the last few years, but no idea for privately owned homes.

It's not a bad idea, but very expensive and very little publicity as far as I can recall so thanks for highlighting it. I'd love to know how they plan to check private homeowners are complying?

For anyone interested. Going to be pretty expensive in some places, and potentially very disruptive/ugly as well.

Heard about this a few months ago. Can't remember if we got a letter or if it was in the press.
We reckoned that it would cost about £300 per household and there was no mention of any assistance being available but this might come in the next few months.
Don't know how they intend to police it until you put your property up for sale.

The government doc suggests £200 pus installation costs as an average, which means nothing as there will be huge variation.


I was looking at interlinked wireless ones which might be a sensible option for some properties as otherwise the upheaval and mess caused could be considerable.


I have not heard anyone talk about this so I think it is going to be a big shock to a lot of people. Having now seen this thread I will certainly be making friends and family aware.

The article I read said that private enforcement happens because home insurance would be invalidated if you weren’t compliant.
