Residential Care

Options
Any knowledge about residential care homes esp in Holywood, Bangor and Newtownards?

An elderly friend is trying to help a relative with this - the relative does not have dementia but is frail.

Any recommendations, links, thoughts would be appreciated.

Also if she does qualify for full funding does anyone know how much that might be?

Many Thanks

My mother was in several homes and ended up in Movilla House in Newtownards. The care was head and shoulders above the other homes she was in and I recommend you have a look at it http://www.movillahouse.co.uk/

I would suggest visiting the care homes once you know the available budget. Make sure you don't have a cold! Just because it is expensive does not mean it is good. The most expensive we visited, the smell coming from the flooring in the entrance was so strong my sister was gagging. As she doesn't have dementia, look for groups of residents talking, ask about what activities they do, also look for carers & the expressions on their faces. This is going to be her home & she needs to feel comfortable. The home my mother was in, they seemed to have 3 main groups, she started in the middle one. So you have people with no dementia, hopefully not just watching TV. People with mild dementia as my mother was in the beginning, sitting often watching TV but so that they could also talk about the TV programme to their friends as my mother did, but then it progresses & to put it bluntly as long as it is kept clean & dry & smell free don't worry.

If the CQC visits a care home when there are no visitors present I really don't see the point in them talking to a lot of the residents as a large number don't know which way is up. Watch out for someone who hasn't been taken to the loo in time, it's distressing & if the carers don't care too much - look elsewhere.

I know this sounds gloomy, but it is much better you should know what to look out for before you start. My mother's home had a bad manager for a couple of months & the whole place went downhill fast. It took less than a fortnight

residential homes usually require a top up payment not coming from the persons money .
Have they got carers at home .

  • Obviously the situation has now changed due to Covid restrictions being in place at many care homes in the UK.
When looking for a care home now you will likely have to make a decision based on the website + brochures or on the home may provide a virtual tour for you.
Once you do select a home, there will be precautionary measures in place restricting visiting also.

  • I've been doing some research on this area and for round the clock care, one option seems to be live in care. The advantages seem to be that the providing the carer has a separate room to stay in, the person needing care is cocooned away from others and this limits the infection risk. Obviously not for everyone, but worth considering and not always as expensive as you'd think.
