Out of date pulses

Hi. I've unearthed an unopened pack of yellow split peas, best before February last year. Should I chuck or cook?
Thanks

In my house that's not really out of date. :rotfl:
  • Well.... I'd be lying if I said it was a one off occurrence......
  • I store all pulses in storage jars and never know what the expiry date is. Only thing I've found is they are really old, they might take a bit longer to cook, but not a big deal and taste just fine.
  • I find that when really old, especially beans, they don't seem to absorb fluid, and can be a bit hard and tasteless. But I think peas will be fine - and if they are mushy peas, you'll be giving them a bit of a mash.

Cook, cook, cook. I have lentils that are decades old - and whilst its true they can lose some of their "freshness", they're still perfectly edible so if you're using them to bulk out a dish rather than be the star*, all will be well :)

    I'd cook them.

I've just finished a packet of corn flour which was best before Jan 2016....

Yesterday when at my MIL I spotted a jar of honey we brought back from holiday for her, in 2017. Think we'll have to have a bit of a clearout next time and take a view on what is usable and what isn't. Bit annoyed as I just wish she'd said she didn't want jam/honey anymore as there are several expensive jars we bought at National Trust properties in there also. We salvaged 2 loaves of bread that went out of date in January which we fed to the gulls on a walk today.

Honey never goes off, it has antibacterial properties and will be edible forever.

I think this is a myth.

If it is stored in a non-sterile bottle, it can easily get contaminated. I wouldn't worry about foodstuffs that have been through a regulated manufacturing process, its pots of honey collected from back garden or "artisan" suppliers that are not without risk.

I would have turned them into croutons - which is exactly what I did with an old sourdough loaf this evening. Yum.
