Right to work

Hi all, My 1st post :-)
My work has asked me to for my passport to provide right to work proof. I been with them since 2006 and the HR department are useless. I was asked 2 years ago and never replied and again they ask. I'm sure I read online that because I joined in 2006 I did not need to provide anything.
I'm born UK so no problem but why should i provide if it's not right! Can someone point me in the right direction please.
Cheers
Mart

We are currently carrying out an audit on the Right to Work documents we hold on file for our employees and unfortunately I am unable to find a copy of your passport/visa on record.
As we do need a copy of this, please can you bring your right to work documents in next week and present this to your supervisor (or colleague if your supervisor is not available), as they will need to verify that it is the original.
They should take a copy of the passport (and visa if necessary), and send them to HR, including the words: I confirm that this is a true likeness and I have seen the original. The date this right to work check was made:…[Date]. Signed…[signature].

All companies have a duty to ensure that all employees actually have the right to work in the UK. You could try contacting HR to say you don't believe you have any legal requirement to provide this, but I don't understand why you have a problem providing the required evidence.0

You are correct that if you have continued in this employment since before 2006 (when the legislation came into effect) the employer did not have to check your right to work. However . . .
If you have a passport, take it into work and follow the instructions in the email.
If you don't have a passport, check with HR. They will be able to tell you what you need - eg a birth certificate issued and other official document with your NI number (perhaps you have an NI card).
It really isn't worth the hassle of arguing about this. And you'll need to go through this process if you decide to get another job.0 -
Friend showed me gov site. Since I started before feb 08 it's not needed so I'm not sharing it. It might get some flack but I'm not fussed since it's written down. Thank you all for the replies.0

Bloody hell talking about potentially cutting your nose off to spite your face.
There are battles worth fighting & then there are battles that are questionable.
Personally I think this is in the later camp0 -
If you don't have to give up information then you don't have too. That's the point and that is why it's on the gov website. So potentially I might get a problem out of it. Be seen as a naughty worker or bring unwanted attention to myself. Big deal go read the guidelines.
When I need to give up my passport for a new job one day then fine no problem but today I don't. :P
Thanks0 -

Quite. Because HR are usually key in many decision making processes - redundancy, pay rises, bonuses, disciplinary proceedings - so p***ing them off unnecessarily is never a great career move.0 -

Well if you know you don't have to provide it & for some reason seem intent on not providing it, why post your question?
Provide it or don't provide it. Your choice but be prepared to accept any consequences you be pi$$y about it brings.0 -
All your doing is showing them a document, you could be job searching sooner than you think.0
