Barclays are a law unto themselves sometimes.

As a general rule you can be guaranteed a stressful time getting a mortgage with them

I think I speak for all brokers when I say, avoid them like the plague.

This pretty much sums up our industry.

An online fee free broker with a big advertising budget is probably a call centre with no real incentive to put the time in and with probably not the most experienced of brokers, all combined is probably not the best mix.

Thanks ACG - feel a bit stupid now.

There is a mortgage broker office near to me. Will give them a try as Plan B.

Hi Thrugelmir - no have never borrowed from Barclays before. Had a mortgage with Alliance & Leicester (settled 2003) and credit cards with Clydesdale (no late payments - settled & closed April 2019) and HSBC (again no issues).
