Advice needed re large debt and no income.

Options
Hi, i am seeking some advise on behalf of my grandparents who have got approx. £24,000 in debt with one income coming in soon to be none due to ill health my grandad is no longer going to be able to work and they can see no way out of this situation. I have suggested that they go and speak to someone but dont know where to start etc and what the options might be is there a possibility of an IVA or bankruptcy. they are both in their 60s. any advice is much appreshiated.

Thank you in advance

Katie

Do they own their own home? Would they be able to sell their home and downsize?

Are they at retirement age, or will your grandad be getting benefits like DLA? Do they own their own home, could they do an equity release scheme? If you get them to call CCCS or Payplan (numbers at the top of the forum), the perhaps they could offer to good advice (they are free too)

  • no they dont own there home and have no savings left they used this to pay off other debt. Dont think my Gdad would be entitled to DLA from not working as he has past retirement age but employer agreed to working past retirement age. They will only recieve pensions and one private pension.

it might still be enough to do a debt management plan with CCCS or Payplan so I would suggest as above they give one or other a call

It sounds like they need professional help National Debt Helpline and CCCS would be a good place to start.
  • DLA is paid regardless of work situation - its based on how your disability affects your life and what sort of help you need to get. Doesnt have any effect on income or benefits.

I cant remember the rules but for older people attendance allowance (i think) is paid in lieu of DLA.

DWP will have more info and could then apply for correct DLA or attendance allowance - lots of help available for this - how to complete forms properly etc. It may help with living costs due to disability/ill health and ease strain of extra financial difficulties due to this.

Good luck with it all, sorry I cant help more.

I would suggest them taking advice from Age concern. They have great advisers for all sorts of things and have been a godsend to my Nan since my Grandad died - helping her out to sort out all the benefits and financial side of things :)
