NCB percentages
There's something interesting in the policy docs for an AA fully comp policy I've taken out today.
Zurich's average %age discount per year of NCB...
One year - 23%
Two years - 35%
Three years - 45%
Four years - 50%
Five years - 51%
...then an extra 1% per year up to...
Nine years - 56%
Given that this policy's currently on 5yrs, and the premium is only just over £160 (including the broker's £28 set-up fee...), I'm now wondering whether the £4.07 for the optional NCB protection is actually worthwhile. Hey-ho. I'll try not to lose too much sleep over it.

Without protected you'd lose 2 so be at 3 years NCB on the presumably higher premium.
I'm not sure what happens above 5, if you drop down to 5 or not (I'm at 11 so protect anyway)0 -

Without protection - 5yrs = 51%
On that amount of premium, the difference in discount is less than a tenner...
(And I suspect anything above 9 is just regarded as 9 - so losing two years would be less than the cost to protect...)0 -
I hope fred doesn't read this. He will have a meltdown.0

I hope fred doesn't read this. He will have a meltdown.
I thought Fred hated garages and all that work in them, use them or look at them in a jaunty manner.
Does he have a vendeta against Insurance too? :rotfl:Life isn't about the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away. Like choking....0 -
Yes, most insurers only consider so many years, after which they really count for nothing as they work back down from their max, like 8 or 9 years.
I hadn't made a claim for 18 years until recently.
Last May someone stole my Abarth and recently some filthy scumbag (methinks it was the bin men) ripped the side out of my car while parked up in the street and f**ked off without stopping.
Both are now down as own fault claims.
I went from 18 years to 4 years NCB in less than 8 months, happy I'm not!
Though my biggest problem is my battered car is due to be traded in for a new one in March.
The trade in price has already been agreed, but I'm not sure they'll repair it in time or if it's written off (which seems likely) they settle in time.
The claims team have arranged for an "approved" body shop to assess it, but I have now found out "approved" means "Numbskull".
They keep ringing me to ask me "does it drive?"
I tell them yes it physically drives but there are some sharp edges where the panels used to be and the rest have ripped open like a can of sardines, so I would prefer it was collected.
They agree it's not safe to drive and tell me they'll sort out a collection.
Then next day, same again. "Does it drive?"
After four days I ended up offering to arrange transporting it there myself, they tell me to hang on, they'll phone back.
When they do we're back to "Does it drive?" all over again!
Normally I'm a reasonable, patient man, but I now find myself searching for "shotguns for sale" on google.0 -
Ring ring
G: Hello, this is Goudy
P: Hello, this is Pleb from XYZ Garage ....
G: Let me stop you there - if you're going to ask "Does it drive" again then I first need to go and get my whistle so I can blow your eardrums0 -
Good news, (it is after all a Dacia) they rang and are going to collect it!
"When?" no !!!!in' idea!
I can't see them fixing it, it's a three year old Dacia. I thought about scrapping it myself when the tyres were worn out.
Can't see the insurance paying for a pricey job like this, one complete side of the car is ripped open.0 -
Doesn't stop them whacking up your GROSS premium though, protected NCD or not!!!How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.98% of current retirement "pot" (as at end April 2025)0

Without protection - 1 claim in 12mo = 3yrs = 45%
Without protection - 5yrs = 51%

But with a claim you don't know what the base price would be.0
