Help with partners debt

Options
Back in March my partner got involved with one of the not so good debt management companies, previous to this I new nothing of how much he owed.
We had a visit from one of their representatives and he agreed to pay them £900 over three months and they would sort it all out, now its nearly December and its still ongoing, (yesterday he was reduced to tears something I very rarely see ) he's had 5 letters in the past 2 days from different companies asking for money, one threatening court action and he's had enough.
I have been saying to him for the past few months that I don't think the company is doing a very good job but he doesn't always listen to me, two of his creditors have accepted the payments but the others have passed the debts onto recovery agencies.
I suggested that he call the consumer credit agency because I believe they can take it over but how do we go about doing this.
Would appreciate any advice from someone whose been in this situation.

First of all, get rid of this company. There are charities that do exactly the same thing for free (and looks like they do a much better job of it). Payplan or CCCS would be my first choices.

Professional, free and impartial advice on debt problems can be obtained from several charitable and 'not for profit' organisations. They never make a penny from the advice they give, which means it will be given with only your best interests at heart. You can contact:

Your local CAB Office and ask to speak to a 'money advisor'
The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) - Tel: 0800 138 1111
    National Debtline - Tel: 0808 808 4000
    Payplan - Tel: 0800 917 7823

Edit: Have they provided statemnts to show where the money has been going so you can see how much is left to pay? I'll check back after lunch.

    Hi

The answers would depend a lot on what your partners debts are for, what sort of APRs and what he earns.

But certainly, he needs to talk urgently to one of the debt charities and get them to help him. If he is on a DMP he can move it to one of the charities that provide a better service for free.

Unfortunately we get a number of people here who have DMPs or IVAs with profit making companies and whose whole payment in the first year or more has been taken to pay set up fees, with none of the money going to the creditors. You can understand why the creditors get mad.

he amy well be able to clim that the money he has iad should be returned as he has been missold and he should complain to the OFT and the FO.

In the mean-time, and partly to give him space to sort out an alternative plan, he should request the Consumer Credit Agreement from each one. The cannot take any action against him until they have sent CCA (as the debt is leggally in dispute in the duration) and it will help him work out exactly who is holding which debt.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • Thanks for the replies so far, three of the debts are for credit cards, ( really need to get statements so he can claim back charges ) two are for catalogues and one is for a loan we had for new windows.
I've told him that none of these are priority debts, I think I'm correct and only wish I'd known about it sooner then I would have sorted it all out for him
