I have a substantial figure of unsecured debt (personal loan and credit cards) which I am still currently making the minimum repayments for. However, the "day of reckoning" will come soon and I will no longer be able to make the minimum repayments.

I do not own property or a car, having both rented and stayed with family thus I am linked to a few different addresses over the last 5 years. I have a very straightforward question (which I'm aware is thinking considerably too far ahead): given 100% of the debt is unsecured with no guarantor (I also have no assets) and I am the SOLE debtor, surely no one else could get dragged into this legally?

My biggest worry is creditors trying to chase family at addresses for my unsecured debts. Of course I'm aware that letters will be sent to those addresses but surely I am the only one who is legally responsible for these debts?

I would appreciate answers from those who have a concrete legal understanding or experience of this, not someone speculating as to what may or may not happen.

Thank you and any guidance is much appreciated.

Your debts (assuming there were no guarantor loans) so yes just your responsibility.0

Debt does not transfer from person to person, ever.
The named debtor is the only one liable, for joint debts, you are both jointly liable.
For debts in your name only, only you are liable.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards.
