If you hadn't found this out would you be happy in your job still?0

Would you be getting yourself into a state if the other person concerned was female?0

I argued the case for my salary to rise further when I was officially given the job last year, but they said I was new in to it (well, I had been doing it since August the year before lol) and that for me to gain a pay increase I would need to become qualified and pass an exam in a certain subject, which I have done so by the deadline they gave me.
Personally I would ignore your colleagues salary, those conversations with bosses about differences in pay never go great.
You have a clear opportunity to increase your pay given they said this would be discussed once you are qualified which you now are. Have you raised this with your employer? What was their response and have you pushed back on it if they've delayed a salary increase?
If you've not had that conversation, then it may be that it's your negotiating skills that need improvement and have resulted in a lower salary over the years.
(Edited to add - this isn't having a go, just encouraging you to maximise the current opportunity to discuss salary due to their past promises)0 -
IF he is getting paid more than you for doing EXACTLY the same job with EXACTLY the same qualifications and experience AND because he has a different gender than you - then yes it’s wrong
Otherwise - tough, that’s how businesses and the job market work0
