If I Can, Anyone Can!

I posted on this forum a few years ago, aged 26, about how much debt I was in and how it was ruining my life because of interest/charges and the fact I was a problem gambler. I was contemplating suicide and worried my girlfriend of 4 years would leave me.

Skip forward to April 2019 and this is what went down:

+ I told my girlfriend I had messed up again and lost around £6,000 in one day (2 days after I won it) and that we were financially unable to cope - this is after we had just moved out of our rented flat for the same reason. I was living at her Dad's house and it was all a bit weird, not being near my family and seeing her 50% of the time as she stayed at her Mum's the rest of the time.

+ My girlfriend left me which I think she needed to do for her own wellbeing - we are still amicable and I still pay her back each month, because I am not a total tw*t.

+ I entered a DMP with StepChange where I pay back £200 a month and simultaneously launched irresponsible lending complaints against each of the creditors I had, including: MyJar, Drafty, George Banco, H&T Pawnbrokers, Bamboo Loans, Everyday Loans, Fast Loan UK, Satsuma, Wonga, Auden, QuickQuid and a few others I am sure.

+ I have managed to knock my DMP down from £25,000 starting balance to £15,000 in 9 months because I have won every single complaint and had balances reduced, interest removed, penalty charges removed, cash refunds where previous interest and charges paid (plus 8% statutory interest) meant they now owed me money and not the other way around.

+ I have not gambled since 25th Feb 2019 and I have registered for GAMSTOP, and also attended Beacon counselling in Manchester 8 times (the maximum) - I am now unable to gamble and I would not undo all of my progress, I lost everything so I am now living to build my way back up. I recommend seeking help and using GAMSTOP for anyone who is struggling.

I would be happy to assist others who need advice - my main tip is to go to your doctor and get them to fill in a DMHEF form which states you are struggling with your mental health due to the worsening financial position - the code of conduct lenders are bound by will essentially force them to be leniant with you.

The negative side would be the impact on my credit rating and the fact that I had to escalate a few of my complaints to FOS, but having done so, and won, the same companies registering missed payments and defaults now to have to correct this information on my credit file.

DEBTCAMEL is a great place to start. The hardest issue I have dealt with in the last few months has been the crazy women on Tinder :rotfl:
