MMD: I was wrongly given an OAP discount for my haircut, should I have paid full price?

Whilst I would probably land up feeling guilty about it I think I would take it as compensation for the insult. After all if anyone knows way too much about you it is your hairdresser. Mine by the way stopped doing pensioner discounts a few years ago.
However, my chiropractor has been charging me full price for some time & it was only when the new receptionist said "is your date of birth correct?" (they had a new computer system) that she started giving me the OAP discount! Perhaps I should have said that is over a £100 you owe me.0 -
No, keep it for the insult.
In fact I wouldn’t have returned.0 -
Does it state what the OAP age is?
Maybe those over 50 or 55 get the rate.
Railways class children as 5-15.
Alton towers, children are 4-11.
The law thinks children are up to 18 years old.
My local bus service suggests children are 15 and under.
Different rules for different places.
If you feel that guilty, tip them the difference.0 -
Dont be silly. Just look at it as a bonus. If companies can afford to give bonuses on a service then they can afford to do it for all. If they do a good job just give them a tip, which will make up for the loss... win win.
Ps... dont forget we are currently in the golden age of pension deals, for most who made provision, by the time we get there the pot will be empty so take what you can get now.0 -

You've just been insulted, two cheap haircuts is the least you can expect.
Agree.
Spend the money you've saved on anti-aging creams.0 -
Last year, when visiting a Cathedral, they asked us if we wanted to Gift Aid. We told them we can't as we're not taxpayers. They then issued us with concession OAP tickets!! I'm not even 50 yet!!!How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0

Consider this to be good opportunity to give the hairdresser a good tip. What you you don't tip you hairdresser/barber? Tightwad.0

You’re knowingly paying the incorrect (lower) price for a service. Is that not theft?0
-
Just how much money are you talking about for the haircut and the discount?
My barber knocks off £1 from the standard rate of £9.50 (spectacularly expensive for the amount of hair to be cut, by the way!), and gets it back as a tip.
Most MSEers will be aware of the legal maxim De minimis non curat lex - "the law does not concern itself about trivial matters" - and neither should you!0
