Before I press the Button..check list?

Options
Hi all

I have just a few more important questions to ask before I press 'GO' and wonder if there is a final 'check list' to go through just to see if I have missed something? The following questions are the ones that concern me the most and if anyone has any advise I would be VERY grateful. I"m just fearful of sending off my application off then finding out I should have done X, Y & Z before I did it.

1. Should I contact my debtors directly and let them know that I'm filing for BR?

2. Should I go to the cash point and get as much out of my current account (in overdraft) to pay f
for food, petrol etc before it gets frozen. I have literally no other means of paying.

3. Should I get a new basic bank account opened before I press GO?
(any suggestions as to who I should approach?) and should I set up all my direct debits and
standing orders before I submit my application. (Guessing yes, right?!)

4. My next loan payment is due to be taken tomorrow for 233 and I don't have enough left in
my overdraft. Should I ring them and let them know I'm filing?? I don't want them to take it
because I'll need the money for food etc.

5. I'm due to get paid my salary next week which will be swallowed up by o/d immediately, how
do I avoid losing my wages. I'll have literally ZERO for me and my family to live off and I'll also
need to pay my rent, utilities, council tax etc.

6. I am in receipt of housing benefit and tax credits. Do i need to tell the Council I am filing?

Literally any advice would be appreciated. I want to make sure I do this right and not make things even worse than they are already. I'm obviously going to hold off pressing the button until I know exactly what I should be doing.

Many thanks
Holly

Can only speak from my own experience but would answer:

    1. If you are under pressure on any then yes. I had one letter before action when I went bankrupt, emailed them, got acknowledgment and never heard from them again.

    2. Most definitely yes!

    3. Arguable. I did mine afterwards with Santander to be on the safe side. I know people who have done it before they pressed go and had no problems but the OR will write out to any bank you have an account with.

    4. Is this loan with the bank you have your current account with? If so I would just cancel direct debit and standing order. If you tell them you are filing they will likely suspend all your accounts with them.

    5. Tell your employer you are changing bank accounts and not to send payment to your current one. Get new one set up as soon as you get bankruptcy order through and pass on new details to your employer. New account can be set up online quickly although there will be a short delay waiting for bank cards etc.

    6. Not entirely sure to be honest as didn't come up with me. Assume OR will write to them but hopefully someone else will confirm.

Best of luck with it. If you have reached this decision I'm sure it will be for the best and will be the start of you digging yourself out of the mire.
  • Hello Holly,

Can only speak from experience but i was in a similar position. I held off submitting for BR until the day after I was paid. That gave me a good 3 weeks to set up the new bank account and notify my employer.
I also withdrew every penny that I could to live on.

I also cancelled all DD and SO for any creditor.

I let the OR notify all my creditors. Things seemed to move pretty quickly once I had submitted the BR.

    Good luck.
