How do I correct my credit file?

I have just accessed my credit file with the free trial with credit expert and everything is fine except that HSBC have recorded me as makeing 9 late payments on my graduate loan which I absolutely did not do, those payments were always taken by DD from my HSBC current account on time and I even settled the loan early! Is there any way I can correct these entries?

I would suggest contacting HSBC and querying it - I think they are the only ones who can update the information on your credit file if it is showing incorrect information.Olympic Countdown Challenge #145 ~ DFW Nerd #389 ~ Debt Free Date: [STRIKE]December 2015[/STRIKE] September 2015

HSBC wouldnt update your credit file. What you would have to do is get in touch with them and ask them to provide you with a letter stating that you have always paid your loan on time. This letter then needs to be send to the credit reference agency stating that you need to file a notification of correction (I think thats what its called!). It would be then the credit ref agency who can update your credit file!
I do hope this helps!!0 -
cheekygal2481, that's not strictly correct.
If HSBC have made a mistake & they acknowledge this, then they can & should update the information to the CRAs.
I've had a similar thing happen in the past. I contacted both the creditor & the CRA concerned & by the time the CRA contacted the creditor, they had already updated the info following receipt of my letter of complaint.
You will probably need to send proof to both HSBC & the CRA to support your request for an update.Donedoingdebt Lightbulb moment January 2000. Debt at highest approx £102,000. Debt now (October 2009 - absolutely fork all!!!)

Thank you both, I will contact HSBC and get together my proof and contact the credit agency. I have a good mind to take my banking business elsewhere, I have never mismanaged any of my HSBC accounts and I feel like they have been rather cheeky.0

I think it is the data controller of the HSBC that you have to write to. This is the info that BR's use to clean up their files post bankruptcy you should be able to use it to help you
Creditors can default the accounts, but it should be a single default dated NO LATER than the date of the bankruptcy order. The account should also be marked somehow to indicate it is satisfied/settled.
Go to the following link to see exactly how your Credit Reference Files and account info should have been correctly updated:
CREDIT REFERENCE FILE CLEAN UP – POST BANKRUPTCY
Then for the accounts that are not correct write the letter in the next link to their "data controller(s)" by recorded delivery.
Letter to former Lenders post Bankruptcy
If they then fail to update your account and records correctly, raise a complaint with the Information Commissioner:
How to raise a complaint with the Information Commissioner
If necessary the Information Commissioner will force them to update correctly, and even fine them heavily if they don't.
The process is a bit lengthy, but it always gets the job done.
