Payday yesterday and with a mixture of Christmas money, some investment money DH was able to give me and the usual CC/Loan payments (plus some overpayments on the urgent balances), I’ve reduced the debt by £3,176.70! This includes paying off and closing the store card!!

I’ve opened a Monzo account and transferred some money into pots!!! Including a start on the emergency fund!!

Def feel like a huge step in the right direction!!

Now to keep to budget and on the straight and narrow until next payday!

DH is proving to be more difficult than I thought he would be! He’s an emotional spender.....we need to sit down and have a chat!

Hope everyone is staying on track!

Well done on clearing the store cards, and the big chunk you've paid off so far. Off to a flying start! I'm patiently waiting for Friday when I get paid and can put my shiny new budget into action. Just trying to squeak through until then with as few spends as possible!

    Just suscribed :)
  • So, DH is becoming my biggest challenge! Don't get me wrong, he is happy that we are tackling the debts BUT he is definitely not on board with the need to tighten our belts! He loves the idea of the budget and the saving pots but getting him to stick to it is challenging.

    Any tips from anyone?

It can be quite challenging if sticking to a budget is quite new to the OH, although in principle they can see the benefits of the budget and pots and it working out better in the long run getting a change in the short could be difficult. It needs a real determination from the OH to come along on the challenge with you, maybe you could talk to them and try find out which part of the budget they aren't keen with and try find a way to compromise on that (if possible). Its a real tough situation as you both really need to be pulling in the right direction and its hard if one is being super frugal and the other is the opposite. Good luck

PS - the tooth fairy visited our house to a few days ago! haha:rotfl:

Perhaps talk about your longer term goals and the things you want to do as a couple and a family when you're debt free. Early retirement? A house move? A special holiday? I did my debt free journey on my own so I can't talk from experience but I know having a 'why' - a reason to change - was the most important thing for me. It's what Dave Ramsey talks about all the time as being the most important thing to a successful debt free journey (you should check his YouTube videos out if you haven't already).

Different people with different personalities respond differently to budgeting - some see it as restrictive (the dreamers / romantics) and some just love it (the control freaks like me!:rotfl:). Talk to your other half about what might motivate him and what role he wants to play in budgeting and financial planning. Also talk about his dreams and his financial goals. Perhaps calculate how much you're paying in interest each month and ask him what he'd imagine spending that on when you're debt free or whatever you think will motivate him - you're the expert on his behaviours and emotions - try to tap into it.

It'll take some time and there might be some road blocks along the way but you've done the hardest part now by recognising the problem and coming on here to share your journey. I'm sure it'll work out whatever route you choose!
  • Not posted for a few days but have been constantly looking at/updating the spreadsheets and savings pots!

Managed to transfer the Sainsbury’s card that was about to come to the end of 0% over to the Barclaycard at 0% for 18 months.

Still in talks with DH about budgets and spending, he thinks that I’m crucifying us by wanting to have everything paid off by Nov 2021 and if I was to aim for Nov 2022 then we wouldn’t feel as restricted....I’m conflicted because I want it all gone but I also understand that it would take the pressure off a bit. I’m going to do another spreadsheet tomorrow with the end date of Nov 2022 and see what it actually means on a monthly basis.

Pots are going well, they really keep me focussed on only spending what I’ve budgeted and also aim to spend less than what I’ve budgeted so I can transfer the surplus to the emergency fund!!!!

Couple of things have cropped up that I hadn’t budgeted for. £90 speeding fine, neither of us know who was driving but I’m happy to blame DH. He’s happy to take it because he actually WANTS to go on the course! I’m fuming about the cost tho!
I ordered the children a new personalised school logo hoodie in September, I was late ordering it and then never heard a peep about it
so presumed the order wasn’t placed. I took the £36 off my spreadsheet at Christmas and now school are telling me I’ve still not collected them!!!! Great! Not only has it cocked up my budget but kids are now 4 months older and 4 months bigger, eldest leaves in July and now they want another £18 for a leavers hoodie!!! So that’s £144 extra I need to find this month. Grrrrrrr

Got loads of items I can sell, hoping to wake up tomorrow with the motivation it takes to actually do it!!!

    Happy weekend all.

This sounds like a great idea. You can then work out together what you would do with the money that wasn't going to debt over the time that you are paying the debt. Would it be holidays, eating out, entertainment etc, and are those things worth it. You sound like me, crazy determined, so I hope it works out in your favour :rotfl:

    True LBM, December 2019 = £32934. Current Debt = £12762. 1% Challenge = 61.1%. #51 3-6 Month EF Challenge = £1200/£6000

  • Payday tomorrow! I’ve been itching to update my signature since last payday!!!

By tomorrow we will have the grand sum of £124.16 in the emergency fund. Last week, all in the space of three days, the washing machine, dishwasher and tumble dryer all decided to start playing up. I think the washing machine has resolved itself but the dishwasher and the Dryer are going to need sorting out. We’ve checked the dishwasher out as far as we could but it’s going to need an engineer or replacing. The Dryer is almost dead, making an awful noise and a burning smell so I just don’t trust it.
I’m determined not to put either on the CC so need to come up with a plan!

I think my mindset is changing slightly, slowly, but it’s def changing.

    e.g
    1. refuse to reach for the CC for luxury appliances.

    2. wont step foot in Sainsbury’s/Tesco! They used to be the only place we shopped!!! Aldi is my new best friend 😀

    3. Keeping the freezer and cupboards low, so only buying what we need at the min. Batch cooking will come.

    Update tomorrow x

  • Chaos on the roads near us this morning, I went through a puddle and burst a Tyre, what a nightmare.
Still not made a decision regarding the Tumble Dryer......hanging everything on the radiators is driving me nuts but it's going to have to be put even further back now we've got a Tyre to fix/buy!
Dishwasher seems to be hanging in there (touch wood), and washing well!
Washing machine hasn't given the error code since so fingers crossed that is all sorted to!
Sticking to budgets is going really well, the Monzo card and it's Pots has been such a massive help.
Hope everyone else is on track (and not bursting tyres)
