Another thing that hasn't been considered is that students pump that loan money into the economy - students are not skint because they have no money, they're skint because they spend it all (& more on credit cards/interest free overdraft).
In a previous career I used to manage supermarkets, & the shops in the student areas made an absolute fortune during term time. & Were quiet in the summer & Xmas. Supermarkets fall over themselves to open convenience stores in student housing areas - the profits are huge!0
