  • Both are welsh ponies, ones a Hardy 'roll in the mud and don't bother with a rug', the other is such a pansy, she sees a dark cloud and is stood at the gate wanting to come in 'just in case' she gets wet lol

That's actually such a cute image. I can see how hard it is to just think of 'selling up' when they're such loving pets. It's good that you have contingency plans in terms of when your kids grow up to help fund their care. It's always nice to think they won't become a sign of financial resentment, and sure the kids will like visiting them even when older.

That's how people end up with lots of horses :rotfl:

I feel really ill - I've worked from home today and yesterday so at least I saved on diesel. Ended up buying cold medicine though at £6 which annoyed me. Suppose it was needed!

Problem is, now I'm run down, the house work wont get done, and neither will any cooking. DD1, bless her, has offered to make tea tonight (under supervision)
  • Today we needed to buy coal.
Rang the supermarkets and found that the local Asda was selling the coal for £4 / 10kg
We bought 24 bags (to fill our bunker) and it cost £96  :s however I've worked out that had we of bought this from the coal man it would have cost £115

No, I probably didn't need to fill the bunker but it seemed silly not to especially with all the bad weather that's been predicted.

Also got given some free seasoned logs earlier, today has been a win

I’m very happy to hear my coal tip saved you some money! Though like you say, might be a good time to have a think about how much you buy of everything. Are you the kind of person that tends to buy lots and stock up “just in case”? I know the coal will come in useful, but have a look to see if you have anything else stored up around the house. I recently did an inventory and found I had enough toiletries to last me months without buying more!

Are your food cupboards full of store cupboard items for example? Start to love working your way through things and not being scared to run things down. Don’t spend on it again until you’re down to nothing. I actually quite sadly enjoy the challenge of using up every last bit of something. Remember, buying cheap isn’t a saving unless you actually use it!

  • Food wise we are eating from the cupboard/freezer and have been since before Christmas. I filled the freezer with reduced items so it's time to empty it and defrost it! (Have an indoor freezer and a chest freezer!)

Today I'm heart broken. I have been looking for cheaper yards and have found one that ticks all the boxes (yey!) But It means I'm leaving the yard we have been at for a number of years, leaving our friends, but mostly leaving the place I feel the safest. It does however mean I'll be saving around £200 a month on livery (I'll be going DIY) it will mean more work for me but in the long run I think we will be happy there. It's just a sad day

  • That is sad. But it’s such a huge saving. Look at it this way - if you had a sudden change in circumstance and an income drop, at your current horse spend you’d probably have to give them up all together. Cutting costs now and being able to get on top of debt and make them affordable will ensure this won’t happen in the future. You can always go back to the yard when you’re clear if you really wanted to, although I’m sure you’ll be happy in the new place. You’ll still see the friends outside of the yard if the friendships are meant to be long lasting.
