I have finally took the plunge and have cancelled my Direct Debits for my credit cards. I am in just over £24k worth of debt and have simply been paying the minimum every month but nothings moving. Mainly because I then dip into the to cover things like petrol as the monthly repayments are over £800, it really is a viscous circle.
I've been worried about protecting my credit score but in reality although ive never missed a payment it's trashed anyway. Something just has to give doesn't it!!
So much pressure is put on people to keep going with payments knowing its going to take years and years and years to clear.
I got into this mess leaving an abusive marriage 12 years ago with two young children and trying to ensure they didn't miss out. Maintenance payments were none existent and life happens, it sounds a bit pathetic when you write it and in hindsight I woud have done things very differently.
So now I feel like taking back some control, getting these things cleared and moving forward. Wish me luck

Well done for taking the plunge! I have a hefty amount to pay off too (18k). From reading the threads on here it seems the most important thing is to STOP using the cards. I don't think I've gone more than a few months for years. So, my first aim is to try this for a couple of months while I work on my budget and try to save a small emergency fund.
