We did this for my dad last month. He had a terminal illness so we had discussions previously and all came to the same conclusion that cremation services are upsetting. There wouldn't have been many people there either so we went for this. In hindsight - it was definitely the correct decision for us.
We knew the date and time obviously and we all sat quietly or did what comforted us most at that time, and supported each other that day. It was still upsetting, obviously, but far far less so.
