Clothes ironing

I think either my iron isn't working that great, its not a very good iron or I just need a better method.

I admit to not being the best at it, but I tried ironing a shirt last night and it was ok at best and took about 30 minutes.

Even then it mostly seemed to iron at all if I pressed the button to release the steam from under it.#

I tried ironing some trousers 3 weeks ago and after 30 minutes no matter what setting I chose the creases didn't even go away at all.

I tried this morning before work as saw a few creases, I decided to (stupidly) touch the iron after it was meant to be hot and it felt warm but not enough to burn my finger.

Im assuming its as stated either not working right or I am bad at this

Any ideas?

  • It depends on the setting you have put it on. The element must be fine because you are getting heat. Perhaps the thermostat ?

Am sure someone much more knowledgeable than I will come along.

    Good luck

Well, unless modern irons are different, I remember older ones used to have a hiss/boil sound when in use and gave off a lot of steam. This one does none of that.

I have it set to max setting and stisll barely does anything. it does work on a shirt i.e if its badly creased it then becomes mildly creased but even after 30 minutes it still didn't look great.
  • Can you borrow someone's iron to compare ?

if it is set to max and its not hot enough to burn you then clearly its broken. i cant say which part of the iron needs repairing etc but you can either take it somewhere to be repaired or buy a new one- they are pretty cheap at the moment in the sales for a decent steam iron.

Yes water in the iron, I think its about 3/4 years old but up until I got my job last year I might of used it 2-5 times a year i.e at job interviews.

It was a cheap £4 one so maybe thats why.

The led on the iron does go off to indicate its heated up, and it is hot just not pull hand back in instant pain, well id assume if I touched it for more than a few seconds it would.

I don't have any friends local that have a iron, may just buy a new one.

To go into what I remember with older irons, when I press the steam button on my iron thats what used to happen all the time with older irons and not just when the button was pressed.

So based on its limited usage I can't remember it working better, that being said I remember it being at least able to iron my trousers though still had minor creases.
  • Have you dropped it, or could it have fallen off a shelf or something similar?

I ask because it sounds like it's broken, and that's how I usually kill mine 😆

Ah, I think I have sorted it, theres 2 dials on the iron and silly me was just doing the settings one, there is a seperate one for a steam setting of vertical, variable , or off I set it to vertical and it is now making the hiss/pop sound a normal iron makes and a little bit of steam but not much, tested the creases on my trousers and they are coming off, far better than before but not exactly easy!

I think I will just invest in a better iron anyway but I still will use this one.

Are you drying clothes in a dryer? If yes, then you're baking them for too long.
If no, are you getting them out of the machine as soon as it finishes and giving them a good shake?
    Does your iron need descaling?
