Many people in a long term relationship wouldn't think about it because breaking up would seem such an unlikely possibility.

I don't know, they're not married and while I agree - no one plans on breaking up - I'm sure they would have had an idea of whether the £90k would have been split or ring-fenced. Me and my partner of around 8 years bought our first house together last year, with a sizeable difference in deposits (just over £50,000) and we'd both spoke about what would happen in the worse case scenario - not that it mattered because the solicitors also brought it up.

I appreciate solicitors may vary but I just can't see how two people can buy a house without even acknowledging the 90 grand... perhaps I'm being ignorant, granted I've not been in a relationship for as long!

That's why I said 'many' and not 'everybody'.

I wonder if it's just co-incidence that the OP and partner are splitting up after the inheritance money has become joint through the house purchase and available for the partner to take a share?
