Lowell chasing money,

Hey Everyone,

Never really been in this position before, usually when a debt comes through the letterbox I will just set up a payment plan with whatever company and carry on until the debt is cleared, but this is really stumping me and I genuinely don't think I owe the money.

I have a statement from Lowell dated 2/1/20 which informs me I owe three separate companies a total of £2080.85

The three companies are

02 UK Ltd owed a total of £713.17 since 19/03/2013
Vanquis Owed a total of £143.87 Since 29/04/2015
Capital One owed a total of £1223.81 Since 27/05/2016

As I have said, I usually will just set up a payment plan but this is a lot more money than I've ever been chased for and disagree that I even owe the money. I have a credit card with Capital One with a credit limit of £200, this is in good standing and was taken out quite recently, if I owed them £1200+ I surely wouldn't then be accepted for another?

Who would I have to contact to get proof of these debts? I have never made a payment toward any of these debts, I actually didn't know of the debt as I'm not being actively perused for this debt, I just get these statements every 12 months.

Am I correct in thinking that after a period of time a debt will become unenforceable if no money has been collected for that debt?

Hi DebtFree20 and welcome to the forum :)

Since you say you know nothing about these accounts, then you should write to Lowell, disputing the accounts. Personally, I would send out three letters, one for each account.

For the Vanquis and CapitalOne accounts, you can send Lowell a standard 'prove it' letter for each account. I suggest using the template linked below:

For the O2 account, I suggest sending Lowell a hybrid letter stating that you have no knowledge of the debt AND that it would be statute barred regardless. Use the letter template linked below:

The letters should be sent via Royal Mail :)

Agreed, the O2 account is statute barred, so you need to tell them that, as for the others, send the provit letter as advised above.

Just thinking about this. I would also check my three credit files to see if these 'mystery' accounts are incorrectly recorded on my files.

  • Thank you for the advice I will get on and do the letters now.

On the letter there is an address for a PO Box, is this the best address to send these too? or is there another address for this kind of thing?

I would send it to whichever address is on those letters you have received...If you have any doubts, then I suggest you phone them up to confirm their address.
