If the cold months get you down and you long for summer climes, it might not be heat you are yearning for, but light.
Scientists say that it's the short days and long nights of winter that create a biochemical imbalance in the part of the brain that regulates many body functions, including sleep, moods and energy levels.
I paid over £100 for each of these items
they were worth every penny though :j :D :j

  • I know this is an old thread but it still comes up quite high in google when searching for light box so I thought I'd give my 2p on the subject.

In my opinion commercial light boxes are a total rip off. You are paying often £100 to £300 for something that is essentially just a normal lamp with a "special" bulb.

But these bulbs are available with standard fittings just like normal bulbs for around a tenner each.

Do a search for "full spectrum lightbulbs" and you will see plenty of websites selling these bulbs for around £7 or £8 each with standard UK fiittings.

One site I found that sells them...

    http://www.uk-energy-saving.com/full_spectrum_light_bulbs.html

Another one which seems a bit more expensive...

    This one seems cheapest...

My advice is to go to a place that sells lightbulbs rather than a scam artist selling them under the label "health products" or "alternative therapies".

I'll move this thread to the 'Health & Beauty' board.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. • This study suggests the colour bulbs you to relieve SAD may best be blue as the blue hue dominates the colour of the sky, with high correlated colour temperature, without significant seasonal variations.

However many may find full spectrum light is easier on the eye and therefore more comfortable to sit in front of a full spectrum bright light rather than a bright white light. Embroiderer's will confirm it's easier to find the right colour thread under full spectrum light.

However I certainly agree their no point in buy an overpriced lightbox to do the job. Screwfix task light £19.99 should do the job for most If you want to change that DTUBE to a full spectrum one then another £6.50 should be all you need to spend.

Do be aware that I used to use these lights and I used to act as agent for one of the major suppliers. However when I took one apart and saw what was inside I decided it was unethical to be party to the rip off so I stopped selling them. I stopped using the lights (I've still got a couple in the loft) when I raised my D3 status.
See Vitamin D vs broad spectrum phototherapy in the treatment of seasonal affective disorder. The D3 worked better than light therapy. See also Vieth's study using 4000iu/d We need more than Canada for several reasons which I'll detail if you are interested.

As suggested -just buy a 'daylight' bulb, not a box.

As a designer I used to look at proposed fixtures and fittings under different types of light -the daylight lamp was just an ES fitting like the rest -no fancy casing required
may you live in interesting times

Good thread. I may well get one of the task lights. Thank you.

  • I bought a beauty lamp last year from Argos for about £49...I think. It didnt help me at all....but maybe I didnt use it enough/sit close enough or posibly the light wasnt bright enough??

Im thinking of upping my Vitamin D3 levels...as Im desperate, Ive been late up 4 mornings this week, and thats my sign that the winter depression is on its way, and its only september!

Can you "overdose" on vitamin D3??
