Cabot SAR help

Options
Hi, I sent SAR to Cabot a couple of weeks ago and receive a letter from them asking to verify my identity. I sent SARs in the past to different collection agencies and never was asked for any ID proofs. Is it new rule or Cabot just being difficult? Should I sent them ID proof or will it be seeing as debt acceptance? Please, advise.

  • Hi,

The ICO has guidance for this. It says:
If you have doubts about the identity of the person making the request you can ask for more information. However, it is important that you only request information that is necessary to confirm who they are. The key to this is proportionality.

You need to let the individual know as soon as possible that you need more information from them to confirm their identity before responding to their request. The period for responding to the request begins when you receive the additional information.
I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

    I love my job

    They're not being difficult.

They're just trying to protect you. People generally hate ID theft.

That’s because most collection agencies have little or no interest in protecting your data, they don’t follow correct procedures, as they simply don’t care, all they want is your money.
At least Cabot make some attempt to comply with regulations, it’s in your own interests to comply.
