I had a second thought about accounting qualifications while looking at another post. What sort of job(s) have you done in FS? Do they give you a lot of transferable skills to accounting type roles? Do you have decent excel skills?
  • Hi,
I have been an investment manager and investment assistant within stockbroking/investment management. I am good with systems and have good knowledge and I have basic Excel Skills, I cant do advanced stuff but I can use Formula but not VBA.

I am not keen on London as its so expensive to live and secondly I cant see how I would ever get on the property ladder which puts me off.

I appreciate London isn't for everyone but this seems like a weird reason to avoid it, the increase in salary should more than cover the increased housing costs. General costs are about the same as everywhere else. I'd expect you to more than double your salary compared to what you were getting in Wales, especially in financial services.

If your parents are in the south coast have you considered the towns and cities between there and London?
    Swindon, Reading Southampton, Bournemouth etc.
It does not look as if you want to change career completely just find a well paying job where you can transfer your skills.
If you go for local authority or NHS you might get day release to gain further qualifications.

I guess the big thing to look at is whether there are jobs in that field and requiring CISI etc. If not you may do better targeting areas where you have transferable skills which could allow you to get back to your previous salary level if you have to take a pay cut to start with.

Would it be fair to say that you've been looking properly for a while but no had a huge number of jobs to apply for?

Some of the suggestions like government, NHS etc look very good to me. I'd still be inclined to look at thr broader area of financial services office work as I suspect you could learn new things very fast, and there are some decent jobs in cheaper areas of the country where you would be far better placed to buy a place to live.
  • Yes I have been looking for a while, but there aren't the jobs out there to apply for etc and many of the salaries are low compared with years ago which of course does not help.

Sounds a bit of a nightmare. I guess there are lots of sectors which had good jobs a few years ago but are declining. Must be worth considering moving sideways into something related?
  • Do you have interest in any field other than finance?

Finance is what I have always worked in. Before that I worked for a small auction house as I did a Fine Arts Degree. I dont want to do that.

Its difficult to know what to do.
