Signed up for body part/organ donation

I think I've signed a form to allow my body parts to be used in transplants or for students to practise on etc

I did it with good intentions

My friend said doctors know if you've signed up and instead of saving you might let you die so they can use your organs etc

Any truth in this or is my friend paranoid? He is Turkish so maybe over there this sort of thing goes on

I was sent a card which says Beat heartbreak forever

there's a donor ID number and bar code. What's that for?

    None at all.

The way organ donation is handled is changing this year -

  • As above, they now help themselves to your organs unless you actively opt out.

You’ve probably only signed up to donate organs for transplant. Donating your body to a medical school is a completely different process and involves a fair bit more paperwork.

I can say 100% your friend is talking absolute tosh.

You have done a wonderful thing, thank you and well done!

Next, go and give blood if you can. :D

DiD you donate goods or money to BHF?
  • I know someone who worked in the funeral industry, a person passed away who wished his body to be donated to medical science but because he passed away on a bank holiday weekend, there were no universities open at the time, he had to have an actual funeral service.

Don't you have a copy of what you signed?

I don't think there is any way to sign up for body donation without contacting individual organisations, so it's unlikely that whatever you signed would cover that.

Normally donations to medical science need to be arranged and fully documented before death. There will always be a system for body collection on holidays etc but they will only deal with the body of persons on their register.

You can't just ring around and hope somebody wants it.

Thank you for the link. I have considered doing this for years I do carry a donator card anyway since the 80s. Found my nearest medical place and will phone in the morning and get the ball rolling.

No funeral to pay for is a big bonus:p
Reading the link they will cermate whatever is left.

And if I can help train doctors brilliant.

Plan to give everything you can - it's absolutely the right thing to do & the difference it makes to those receiving as well as those grieving is amazing. That you will be allowed to die so they cab use you for spares is a complete load of cobblers. Even if you are young fit & a super rare blood group. I'm hoping/presuming you're a blood donor? Maybe even platelets? No worries, even if you're not yet, there's time to overcome the needle-phobia & save lives whilst still breathing. (Ahem, thought of sperm donation? Living, altruistic, & they cannot come knocking on your door.)

Just leave enough for a cremation etc Anyway, as unless you know you are going to die in a fully equipped hospital, the Fates may carry on in their own strange ways & mean your good intentions still shine, but you can't be all the help you hoped & need those last services just the same.

That way the money can go to a charity of your choice or your survivors or whatever if you Do get into med school etc, but if you can't, they aren't left grieving & struggling.

They can now, children conceived using donor sperm can get the donor’s details when they are 18.
