That’s so generous of you keepcalmandcraft, I am going to resist because I already have more random yarn than I can use.I just wanted to say thank you to all the people who commented on the hat, I am delighted that the fabric brought back so many memories for people! I’m really glad I rescued it.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.3

PipneyJane said:@keepcalmandcraft, that is very sweet of you. For those who are tempted, the Patons Diploma Gold is perfect for socks. Three skeins should be enough for 2 pairs of adult ladies socks.
Yes, I saw the announcement about public transport this evening, @joedenise. I’m glad they finally did it. I was on the B00ts website last weekend and saw that they were selling regular surgical masks for £35/box of 50. (Disposable masks that should last between 3-4 hours.). I must admit that I was tempted BUT I have no reason to travel on public transport and it feels like profiteering at that price. Still, that’s the benchmark. I may yet give in.

I tried to catch up with you all yesterday & failed miserably! 70-something posts, I've missed. Still haven't bought anything - not that there's been much chance - apart from the sandals, or made the knickers from the ancient & rather holey top that I seem to be wearing right now... But I may splurge a bit tomorrow; as the market's opened up a bit now (it's been going all along with food & homewares) there's a lass with some really nice linen dresses, some of which look as if they might not make me look like a small mobile marquee. Worth a try, anyway! We're still under the impression that DS2's wedding in France in September will go ahead as planned, & I'll need some comfortable day-wear...Angie - GC Jul 25: £225.85/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)2

As we are repeatedly being told the mask will only stop YOU spreading a virus and not stop you catching one, and a face covering or badly fitting mask won't do that effectively either, it is all just a placebo effect, washing your hands is the best defence against anything.

I completely agree with you Dolly, but now that they are made mandatory on public transport I’m going to make a couple more. I think it’s pointless, but if we want to go about our daily business we will have to wear them. I just hope this doesn’t make it harder for medical staff who really need them to get hold of proper equipment.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. I haven't seen a single other fabric mask, not one. I've seen scarves wrapped round, and cowls pulled up, and lots and lots of single-use surgical masks and some N95-type masks, as well as some obvious DIY-store masks normally worn for eg power-tool use.... but not one other fabric mask in 3 or 4 supermarket trips.

On the subject of face masks, my understanding is that multi-layer cloth masks prevent/reduce the odds of an infected wearer passing on the virus. They do nothing to stop a wearer breathing in virus particles (ditto most surgical masks). That’s why they are permitted in operating theatres, but they have to be boil washed after each wear, steam ironed when dry and not reused without washing. The risk in an operating theatre being that staff will breath bacteria/viruses into a wound. (If you want me to rant about infection control, I can go on for hours. I nursed at an infectious diseases hospital before leaving Oz.)

I must confess I have worn a fabric mask outside when walking the dog (I don't go anywhere else thanks to agoraphobia) not because I have Covid, or am trying to avoid catching it from anyone else (well I am but it wont be the fabric mask that does it) but simply because when wearing it people respect the idea of 2metres and then some, and stay the heck away from me and the dog which - as an introvert with a dog with zero social skills - I love!Wealth is not measured by currency6

I have some fabric masks made by a friend which I will presumably need for our regular (outpatient) hospital trips. I've seen a few people wearing them out and about but haven't worn them myself yet - not spending much time in town at the moment.
Bought 7 50g balls of cotton yarn yesterday, that is 7 coupons used. It is for a stripy jumper for the toddler so technically not "my" coupons, however, it's really to indulge my knitting habit so counting them from my ration.
