Council tax reduction possible for pensioner with some capital?

I'm looking into helping someone who is a pensioner and also receiving some care allowance to see if they are entitled to a council tax reduction.

They meet most of the criteria to get some help but there is a savings threshold of 16k which this person is over by about 6k, which is from savings over many years of low income work.

For this reason the person can't apply.

Is there anything they can do to receive some council tax help or do they have to wait until they've used up their savings and then apply?

Thanks for any information.

    the threshold is the threshold

short of committing fraud it is what it is
  • I was wondering if there are any ways to go under the threshold, would investing in an ISA make a difference or some alternative which might help?

ISA makes no difference, he still has the money.

Like you've been informed no. He needs to spend his money on Day to day living then apply when under the threshold.

Why does someone with £22k need means tested benefits!
