My wellies have both split! I discovered this when walking the dog in the dark and got a soggy foot walking through a puddle
Both wellies have perished rubber on the side. Probably and inch or so in length. Is it worth trying to rescue them? They were a present from my exDH probably 6/7 years ago now. Other than the perished parts of rubber they’re in fine condition.
Is there a way of repairing them?

Googled it and quite a lot have recommended Stormsure glue

Also some state cracking occurs when the welly is old or is a cheap rubber, so is it worth repairing or buying a new pair?“You’re only here for a short visit.

Aquasure, also from Amazon. Repaired my wellies, one having a small split due to overuse, the other had a 2 inch cut along the top, result of an accident with a metal sheet. Now both watertight again. Also stuck the sole back on OH's work boots. Mumtoomany.Frugal Living Challenge 2025.

Try wearing plastic bags over your wellie socks as a quick solution. It sounds mad, but actually works.0

Thank you for the repair ideas. They’re not particularly cheap, not hunters but not £5 from the market either. They’re kind of sentimental I guess and apart from the split perfectly usable so I’m trying to do the make do and mend idea rather than just throw them away. Thought maybe I’d get another year or two out of them if possible to repair them 0

What you do then is to drill holes in the soles, fill with compost, plant flowers in the top and put them outside your front door.
We did it once to all the odd unclaimed wellies in school. They lined the school path and looked great.I believe that friends are quiet angels

Lovely idea! I’ll save them for the spring and put some daffodils in them, they have daffodils on them so it will look lovely 0

Wellies are my main footwear, or so it seems. Walk my dog 5/6 times a day, muddy field or beach, trainers only in mid summer.
It is really irrelevant how much you pay, mine all crack, hunters included, at the "ball of the foot" where your foot flexes when walking, or on the ankle again from flexing.
,Do I need it or just want it.1 -
I always longed for a pair of wellies when I was a little girl, but my late Mum had an aversion to them and called them 'road meders boots '
so instead, when walking to and from school over Blackheath in London I got wet feet
(I think my late Mum was a nit of a Hyacinth Bucket )
When I grew up I never got any ,but in my 30s I was given a pair of boots which were beautifully 'broken in' but made of leather from a friend who had more money than sense and was going to throw them out as she decided they were the wrong colour for that 'season'I wore them every winter for about 12 years and had them resoled and heeled every summer .Eventually they became to old to even repair, and they ended up at my previous house with compost and flowers in by the patio in my garden.
When I moved house in 1995 to where I now live I left them for the new owner as she had remarked how much she liked them in the garden .
They really had weathered by then .
Now I am in my mid 70s and still haven't had a pair of wellies on my feet, but my youngest DD says when we move in around two years time to live on the IoW she will treat me to a pair of wellies for walking with her on the beach with the dogs in winter .Hopefully I will finally at almost 80 get my wellies .I wonder if she could find me a nice pair of size 6 in bright red as I longed for back in the 1950s0 -
My Hunter boots split too. they’re terribly made, and I was very disappointed. Seems I’m not alone, and it may be plastic packets over the Hunter boots. I’ll have a look at the Stornsure glue recommended.

My only reservation about the wellie technique is that they are unlikely to stay upright in gusty conditions! No man is worth crawling on this earth.
So much to read, so little time.2
