Selecting which union to join up to?

Is there anything you should look at beside monthly cost?

I have a relative who's looking at joining a union. When i joined mine i just joined the only one i'd heard of, no other criteria. This isn't necessarily the best way to do it i'm sure.

As there's a few out there is it just a case of same old same old or should some kind of thought process go behind it?

If. There's a recognition agreement with the employer, consider that union. If there are more than one then consider which stewards are more effective in the workplace and speak with them.

Different unions specialise in different professions and kinds of workplaces so check for any which are good matches - the airline pilots union won't be as much help to a baker, or vice versa, just to start at the top of this list!

But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

  • There is nothing in place. Small number of workers, nobody is a member of a union. Most of them are foreign minimum wage workers.

The job is in the bakery industry, sort of. Making foods on the bakery line as well as branching out in to other foodstuffs so i guess bakery isn't a million miles from it.

So looking at that link, TUC would be best suited i think?

TUC is the trades union congress, ie an affiliation of unions rather than an actual trade union.

Google union finder to work out which is best

Just found the link for that; https://www.tuc.org.uk/join-union

Definitely check with the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
  • Bakers and Food Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) probably best. And theyre affiliated to the TUC I believe
