Health retirement approved but have to speak to pension wise.

Hi again. Just after a little more advice

With one sheet of paper and within 4 days Royal London have approved a ILL health retirement, to which pension pot is around 14k and therefore he has been told he has to have an hour interview with pension Wise. Can anyone explain what the call will be about.

Q2 has a 20 year civil service pension - no longer employed with them. Some was classic and some alpha I’m sure you will have a better idea of the dates it changed
I do not expect health retirement would be so simple so would it be better to wait until 55 and if so could claim classic and alpha at the same time.

Many thanks Anne

  • No one able to offer any advice
  • Re the Civil Service pension - as you've left already it wouldn't be ill-health retirement but you could see if you qualify for early payment due to subsequent ill-health. From their alpha benefits leaflet:

    Ill-health retirement after leaving
There is no ill-health retirement option for members who have left with a preserved pension.
If you want to claim a preserved pension early due to ill-health, you can as long as you are over the
minimum pension age. This will be under the usual payment rules, and your pension will include an early payment reduction if it is claimed before your NPA.
If you are terminally ill with a limited life expectancy, of under 12 months, you can access your benefits as a one-off payment at any age. You should contact Civil Service Pensions who will guide you through the application process.
Mortgage Free thanks to ill-health retirement
