    He wasn’t on sick leave

On what basis was your late father only being paid 50% of his salary?

As explained in my original post. He was on a phased return to work.

working full time for half the money, or working half time hours?

I don't want you to post it but do you have the latest pay packet?

It was 50% of the hours for 50% pay.

    Thanks

Was there a change to contract of employment (I guess not) and what is the description against the gross pay on the paypacket, and does it mention fallback pay anywhere on the paypacket?

    Salaried or hourly paid?

    do you have his contract?

do you have the scheme booklet or the whole trust deed?

There was no change to the contract. I’ll have a look and check his last pay check. He was salaried. I don’t have his contract, but I’m sure I could obtain it. I have a document called “scheme rules” which is 242 pages.

    Thanks

That's perfectly normal if the absence was for an extended period of time.

You may well find that he was receiving a contractual rate of pay.

Hence my comments regarding his employers sick policy.

Was your father a member of a trade union?

If so, the union may assist; the union may be represented on the board of trustees of the pension scheme. If not successful, they may refer you to some benevolent scheme that could cover the lost benefit, especially in cases of hardship.

OP - I wouldn't worry posting on this thread any more. Put together all the information you've got and head for TPAS - and please, if you wouldn't mind, do come back and update this thread with the outcome.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

If he had of left employment entirely then no death in benefit or sick pay would have been received at all.

Not necessarily true, deferred members often have an element of death benefit - certainly the CS pension schemes do.
