    Ok can you get the laptop to boot from a USB device in the BIOS?

    To do this restart the laptop and press DEL so that the BIOS screen comes up

    i've got those menu's now......which one do I press and do I insert the usb stick now or later?

    I would imagine that D will be your DVD drive, so try this

    Type cd..
    press enter
    Type cd..
    press enter
    Type e:
    press enter
    Note the stops

    Does the prompt change to e:\>

  • Sorry lost MSE for a couple of minutes there

    Go to Advanced CMOS options

    Can you see first bootable device or something like that?

    If so, use the arrow keys to get to that, and then use the option to change it to USB device

    went there and did as suggested but still no luck.... didn't even have an option for usb???????

  • Ok, go to this page, download and unzip windows XP quickboot

    Copy the contents of the unzipped file to your flash drive

    Now boot your lappy, with the flash drive in

    I am so appreciative of all your help and I'm sorry for all the numpty questions.

    Do I put the usb stick in first and then start-up the laptop?

    or what do I exactly do?

  • Yes, make sure you have copied the file to the sub stick, and press the F8 to hopefully bring up safe mode
