  • Happy belated birthday, it sounds like you had a lovely time.

Hope you and DS have got rid of the lurgy now xx
  • Thanks pmo2. He's still ill, showing signs of dehydration because he's barely keeping anything down and now his ear is hurting too. Debating whether he can wait until tomorrow to see a Dr. It's 6 days of throwing up and the 7th of barely eating. He's had a rather rubbish time!

Hi Fran - your poor son, that's a horrid bug. I would ring NHS 111 to get their opinion and/or see if there's a walk in NHS centre you could take him to. Not necessarily A and E but more of a minor injuries type place. Even if it's just to reassure you.
I hope he starts to improve very soon.
    Take care
  • Have you tried ice lollies? Something I was advised to do when one of mine had a prolonged bout of sickness. Don't ask me how or why but it worked for my DD and helped her to get and keep something down. Hope your son feels better soon.

  • Thanks guys. I decided it couldn't wait and we went off to a&e earlier today. When we arrived someone gave us their parking ticket, so we didn't have to pay, and the ward's written my car off charges until 1st of January, just in case.
We've had a nightmare of it after being deleted off the system and they didn't realise we were still waiting to see a Dr after having seen triage at 1:30pm. 6pm we were seen by a Dr, then sent to paediatric assessment and came up to the ward at 8:30pm. After leaving home at 11:45am it's been a long day.

My boy's on his second IV of fluids. They saw from the rehydration challenge that he was throwing up more than he was taking in. He's perked up an awful lot and is now sleeping. Fingers crossed we'll be allowed home tomorrow and he's already asking for food! Which he can't have yet.
They think it was a viral infection that caused the vomiting and the ear ache, which may have turned bacterial (2 drs disagreed), and when he yawned the pop was his eardrum perforating! Just on the one side.

I have a cotbed in his room and my boyfriend is bringing a few bits. The NHS is so amazing and the staff were so sweet and brought me a sandwich etc when I asked if there was a vending machine so I could grab a cold drink (I had brought 2, drunk one and gave one to another family way earlier in the day).

Unfortunately, when ill my boy refuses anything other than water as it tastes "yucky". The apple juice here didn't go down well. But I might try that tip in the future.

I tried 111 twice and it just ended up cutting off after 10-12 minutes of being on hold. And we have no walk in centres. We're 30 miles from the nearest hospital, so we just ended up biting the bullet and coming in.

Work were lovely when I called and explained that I wouldn't be in tomorrow. Can't really argue with "I'm with my son in hospital" though, I guess!

Happy belated birthday and hope your son is better soon. My nearly 6 year old has been ill for a few weeks, he had ear ache for a few days, took him to doctor who gave him antibiotics, now he's got a scabby nostril that looks infected poor kid, merry Christmas to all of us!

Your life by the sea sounds lovely, it's my dream!

Good luck with boyfriend moving in and his career change :)

Hi Fran - I'm glad that your son is being well looked after by the hospital and that you were shown some kindness too. Little things make such a difference. I think I read that over 100,000 NHS staff were at work on Christmas Day and I'm sure that equal numbers we're supporting people in the community and in care homes etc.
Jox - I hope your son gets better soon.
  • Hope your boy feels better soon jox.

We were allowed out at lunchtime. He's eating and drinking again which is brilliant. His ear is leaking, which is gross. But he is on the mend. They were so sweet an gave his a Christmas present too as he'd been ill all Christmas. It's a Harry potter trivial pursuit game. I took him to drive through McDonald's afterwards and he ate that too! Other than fuel, which I've not topped up, that's been our only expense.

Still got to keep him in for a bit as it's the flu, but despite being more perky he's still very run down. Both he and the boyfriend are napping on the sofas. It's all kinds of cute.

Hope you are having a nice New Year's Eve and that your son is able to start to enjoy the holiday season.
Happy new year. "See" you in 2020
  • Thanks Blackcats. The boy and the boyfriend both fell asleep before 7pm on the sofa downstairs. The boy's been able to eat a little bit but is still tired and his ear's still leaking. The neighbour came to borrow some scales and said how poorly he looked, whereas I can just see how much better he looks.

2020 should be a good year. Got all my numbers ready for my goals and it'll be great to have a grasp on my figures before the man-thing moves in (eep).
