Import duty or fees for books from U.S to U.k?

941 Posts

Hopefully most appropriate place to ask,
I'm looking at buying 20 to 30 books, some new some used from the U.S and having them sent to me in the U.K.
I have looked everywhere and jsut want a straight forward answer at this point how exactly the import duty works here. I was under the impression books were exempt but still can not find a straight forward answer to what sort of/if any fees I would be liable for on import?
Also if it's just books as above, is there a specific/code to desscribe them on customs form?
Many thanks!

Duty will depend on the value of the consignment
Most books are duty free as well. I paid nothing on some natural history guides I purchased from Australia recently.

That is all to do with VAT.
Duty appears to be 2.5% of the cost of the consignment Inc Post and packing
Gifts below £135 are duty free

However if you import them then the duty is 0.00%. However I think you may have to register for that
