Could the Grandfather not have made his grandson his benificiary ,this would have by-passed the blacksheep daughter.

Yes, of course he could've, but he didn't.

For other readers, yes this is possible, if that's what you want to happen.

Also you can make a will, to cover your other assets.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

The grandfather may have wanted to avoid the possibility that his grandson bought himself a flash new car on his 18th birthday with his granddad's pension instead of paying for university.

Any hope you may have cherished about keeping the family peace have gone up in a cloud of mistaken beliefs as to entitlements.

She is in the wrong so, other than sorting her a professional education by one solicitors letter at your expense, I would do nothing other than ensure you & your family have up to date Wills & have sorted out who gets Guardian-ship of your son should that become necessary.

Point out that if she wants to challenge matters, it will come right out of her share of the Will & still won't alter your grandfather's expressed & documented wishes.

While arranging the educational letter, ensure son is in earshot & understands that there is a row, which is not his fault, and that he should treat Aunt with the respect & caution merited. None of this is his fault, but it will assuredly come to land on him at some stage so he's better protected aware than ignorant.

Of course the person who inherited the death benefit could go out and buy a sports car rather than save the money for the grandson,s education:rotfl:
  • Well, thank you all for you responses.... but things now appear to have "resolved" themselves..

My sister texted me last night saying "keep the damn money, I don't want anything to do with you any more, bye" ...

Disappointed, yes, surprised, no... will i loose any sleep, no... will this actually be the end of it... i suspect not.

She caused nothing but trouble for everyone and if she wants to throw her toys out the pram then that's her call... she made the decision, not me.

Sad, but it happens. Her loss. I wonder if she went to one of the 'no win no fee' merchants - who declined to act for her on the grounds that she had no chance of winning.

    That did cross my mind
