Different wages for the same job within a department

I think the answer is yes but i would just like to check - is it ok for employees who do the same job as each other to be paid differing rates of pay or do they need to be paid the same (age depending)? People who act like doormats are rarely promoted. If you are unwilling to standup for yourself and consider your time/skills of so little value, your employer shouldn't have to pay for them. Why would anyone promote you?
