Membership increase from January 2020

Hi, I have received a letter about my sons gym membership, advising that it will increase from January 2020.
The membership was a waste of money as he doesn’t use it and I’ve been kicking myself that I signed up to a 12 month contract (which doesn’t expire until August).
I seem to remember that if a bill goes up you have so many days to cancel the membership without a penalty, is that right or have I made it up?
Thanks in advance!

You need to refer to the contract that was willingly entered into last summer.
The price can only change during the term if the contract allows it to.
Even if the contract allows a price rise, it must not represent a significant departure from the original basis of the contract. If it does then you may have a right to terminate your membership.
Thanks for the response - don’t think the increase constitutes a significant change, I was just being hopeful I could close out the monthly cost early!:rotfl:
Why does he not use it ?
Did he ever use and just stop going ?
Any increase to price should either:
a) Give you the right to enact the contractual cancellation period
or b) Allow you to see out the remainder of your minimum term at the contracted rate, terminating upon expiry of the contractual period.
