Membership increase from January 2020

Options
Hi, I have received a letter about my sons gym membership, advising that it will increase from January 2020.

The membership was a waste of money as he doesn’t use it and I’ve been kicking myself that I signed up to a 12 month contract (which doesn’t expire until August).

I seem to remember that if a bill goes up you have so many days to cancel the membership without a penalty, is that right or have I made it up?

Thanks in advance!

You need to refer to the contract that was willingly entered into last summer.

The price can only change during the term if the contract allows it to.
Even if the contract allows a price rise, it must not represent a significant departure from the original basis of the contract. If it does then you may have a right to terminate your membership.

Thanks for the response - don’t think the increase constitutes a significant change, I was just being hopeful I could close out the monthly cost early!:rotfl:

Any increase to price should either:

    a) Give you the right to enact the contractual cancellation period

or b) Allow you to see out the remainder of your minimum term at the contracted rate, terminating upon expiry of the contractual period.

yeah actually there should be a way for you to terminate this thing because if you don't want it or use it and they have increased the prices you are entitled to a contract termination

Look at the contract you entered from last summer, and see whether it mentions anything about the cost changing during the dates.
