I have an interview for a school receptionist job coming up. This is a role that I haven’t worked in before so any help would be appreciated. What questions should I expect in the interview and there will also be a skills assessment. I have previously worked in Retail and currently in Optics. Thank you!

Here are a few questions you should anticipate, and have an appropriate response prepared:

Why do you want this job? What attracts you to this position within Education?
Tell us what you believe the role of this position entails.

You started off in Retail, and then moved to Optics.
What initially attracted you to Retail, and why did you leave?

What attracted you to move to your latest job in Optics, and why are you now leaving that?

What skills have you acquired in your employment to date that you think you can bring to assist you in this new position?

You appear to be jumping around from one profession to another, and this postion is certainly very different to to those you have previously worked within. Where do you see yourself in say 2 and 5 years time?

Good luck! Hope it all goes well for you :)

Anything that reflects the candidates true thoughts and feelings, rather than reciting meaningless phrases which they think I want to hear!

But that might be what they think - this is a receptionist's job, not changing the world!
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

We’ve recently recruited a new school secretary/receptionist. At interview the tasks candidates were given were to proofread a document and make corrections and, as the ability to multi task effectively is critical, a list of 5 simultaneously occurring scenarios to decide what order they would deal with each and describe their reasons.

Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

When asked why you want this job, the answer is NOT "Well, it's a school hours job and I need to work school hours." Honestly, I heard myself saying this and wanted to crawl under a rock. Fortunately I managed to pull back from it and talk about the wonderful work they do (small charity) and I'm still there a large number of years later!
